Talks to normalise relations with Israel
Turkish and Israeli officials have met in Switzerland to discuss normalising relations. But Ankara has three requirements before any agreement can be made. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Israel has fulfilled one by apologising for the Mavi Marmara incident. It happened in 2010, when the Israeli navy raided the Turkish ship. On board were activists trying to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military killed 10 people and injured 30. Turkey says Israel still needs to compensate the victims of the attack and lift the blockade on Gaza.

AU may send 5K peacekeepers
The African Union Peace and Security Council is considering sending 5-thousand soldiers to Burundi. President Pierre Nkurunziza has rejected calls for a peacekeeping mission in his country in the past. But the AU does have the authority to send troops there without his consent. On Wednesday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that Burundi needs ‘inclusive political dialogue..urgently...to prevent mass violence.’ At least 300 people have died in anti-government violence since April. Opposition groups say Nkurunziza’s third term in office is unconstitutional.

CEO of drug company arrested
The CEO of a drug company who tried to charge 750 dollars for one pill earlier this year has been arrested. But Martin Shkreli wasn’t taken into custody for his controversial business plan. A US attorney accused him of ‘engaging in multiple schemes to ensnare investors through a web of lies and deceit.’ After his arrest, the hashtags Shkreli and karma were trending on Twitter.

Beijing issues 2nd ‘red alert’
Beijing has issued its second red alert for pollution. The city issued the warning last week. Authorities say the smog is likely to be worse this time, exceeding 500 micrograms a cubic metre. That’s 20 times more than what the World Health Organization recommends. The ‘red alert’ forces many schools to cancel classes and construction to stop. It also reduces the number of cars allowed on the road.
