🚀What will the United States military do with the images captured by surveillance cameras?

On February 2, 2022, at 3:27 p.m. EST, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying an NRO NROL-87 payload lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Vandenberg in California and Cape Canaveral Station in Florida have been the NRO's primary launch sites in the past. A surveillance satellite was launched from outside of the United States for the first time in 2020 when Rocket Lab Electron launched NROL-151 into low earth orbit from New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula.

The spy satellite's activities and instrumentation, like those of other NRO spacecraft, are classified, so it's unclear what it will do up there. The spy satellite fleet of the United States is managed by the NRO. A live webcast of the recent launch was carried out from liftoff till the separation of the first and second stages. At that moment, under NRO guidelines, coverage of the final leg of the mission to orbit was cut off.

The Falcon 9 rocket returned to Earth after sending the NROL-87 satellite into orbit. To support its overhead reconnaissance mission, "NROL-87 is designed, built, and operated by the NRO to support its overhead reconnaissance mission," is designed, built, and operated by the NRO.
