In 1984, Ivan Lendl was struggling to shed the image of being a cowardly player, so it was a definitive moment in his career when he survived a bruising semifinal match with Australia's Pat Cash.

Lendl, the man who solves the Rubik's Cube in seconds, learns languages in months and sometimes seems to have an Apple computer for a brain, glared back at Cash and pointed his finger right back.

Cash, who is a hot-tempered brawler and all-around pretty hard case, took the gesture wrong. Or, perhaps, took it just as it was intended.

He pointed his finger at Lendl as though to say, "Don't you show me up or we'll play some Australian rules tennis."

"Don't you yell at me," Lendl yelled at the muscular Cash.

Such grace was perhaps too much to ask of Cash, a tempermental teenager. He flung his racquet deep into the courtside seats at the end of his match and was fined $2,000 by the Mens' International Professional Tennis Council. A council spokesman said that they considered the emotion of the moment, but that the danger to spectators forced their hand.
