There are numerous reasons for upper thigh pain. Some are fairly obvious, and widely known. There are others that have medical names that you've probably never heard of. This video lists and briefly describes causes of upper thigh pain you're most likely to experience in your everyday life.

Muscle strains

While muscle strains can happen in any part of the body, they’re common in the legs and may cause thigh pain. Symptoms can include sudden onset of pain and soreness, stiffness, swelling, weakness, and skin discoloration along with limited range of motion.

Blood clots

A blood clot that forms deep in one of your major veins can be a serious health threat. Blood clots happen more in the lower legs, but they can also form in the thigh. Sometimes there are no symptoms, but other times you might also experience pain, swelling, tenderness, a warm sensation, and a bluish skin color.

A type of blood clot known as a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) can travel to the lungs and cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

Hip flexor strain

Hip flexor muscle injuries may result in upper thigh pain due to overuse during activities like dancing, martial arts, or running. Hip flexor strains can also cause muscle spasms in your thighs.

IT band syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) happens when the iliotibial band, which runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the knee, becomes tight and inflamed.

Symptoms include pain and swelling, which can extend from the knees up to the hips. In some extreme cases, surgery may be necessary.

Diabetic neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is the name for damage sustained by the body over a long period of time by diabetes, or high blood sugar levels. Diabetic neuropathy usually starts in the hands or feet, but it can spread to other parts of the body as well, including the thighs. Symptoms include sensitivity to touch, loss of sense of touch, and difficulty with coordination when walking. Other possible symptoms are nausea and indigestion, diarrhea or constipation, dizziness upon standing, and excessive sweating.

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome

This condition causes pain in the outside of your upper thighs. It’s typically caused by injury, pressure, or repetitive movements, and it’s common in runners and in women. Pain tends occur after weight-bearing activities, such as walking or running, and it often worsens over time.
