video thumbnail
Everybody has heard of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Emperor of France, and his historic battles, successes and failures, across Europe, but what happened after Waterloo and what does this have to do with the Fusilier Museum in Bury.

This film is part of the new exhibition "Napoleon in Exile" which is on at the Fusilier Museum.

Following his defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon was captured by the British. They did want him to escape again, as he had done from his previous captivity on Elba allowing him to raise another great army, so he was sent to the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic.

Napoleon arrived on the island, with a number of his officers who wanted to go into exile with him, on 15th October 1815 and was given residence in Longwood House.

The British army maintained a battalion on the island to make sure he could not escape and to ensure his safety, and this is where the Fusiliers enter the story. The 20th of Foot, the Lancashire Fusiliers, were at that time called the East Devonshire Regiment and in 1819 they took on the responsibility for guarding Napoleon until his death on the 5th May 1821.

The Fusiliers and their doctor, Surgeon Major Arnott, were the last to see him alive.

This film supports the "Napoleon in Exile" exhibition. Come to the museum and see the room where he died, here the story of his final years, and the conspiracies about the cause of his death, see his tunics and pistols, and learn how a little bit of Lancashire will always be associated with Napoleon Bonaparte.

This exhibition has been made possible as a result of the Government Indemnity Scheme. The Fusilier Museum, Bury, would like to thank H M Government for providing Government Indemnity and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and Arts Council England for arranging the Indemnity
