Il Poggione 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy Premium Wine Review |
|
Il Poggione (pronounced "ill po joan nay") was established by Lavinio Franceschi, who was a land owner in Florence. He came to Brunello after hearing stories from a shepherd who brought his herds to Montalcino in the winter. He fell in love with the land and established a farm, that eventually became a winery in the early 1900s. The Franceschi family still owns the winery (Note: on the capsule of the label, you will see the name Franceschi in the video).
It is still really a working farm today. The winery consists of 530 hectares, of which only 140 hectares are used to plant vines...another 50 hectares are used to plant olive trees and the rest of the land is used for grain fields, forest and livestock. In the video, I go a bit more in depth about the Brunello di Montalcino region. I think a great Youtube channel to learn about wine regions is Wines with Jimmy. There is also this great map that list all the wineries in Brunello and whether they are on hills at http://casavacanze.poderesantapia.com/album/montalcino/brunellodimontalcinomappa.htm to support my opinion that that the top end Brunello producers are generally at higher elevations and why there is a tiered system in Brunello. This wine, Il Poggione 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is only produced in exceptional years. Recently, it has only been produced in 2010, 2012 and 2015. It is a single vineyard wine with all the grapes used coming from the Panganelli vineyard, the wineries oldest vineyard established in 1964. Vines in this vineyard are about 40 years in age. The wine spends 4 years in large French oak barrels and one year in bottle before release. About 40,000 bottles of the wine are produced in the years it is produced. It is priced in B.C. around $112 per bottle For more information about this winery, please visit their website at https://tenutailpoggione.it/?lang=en |
