Too Much Cardio = Weight Gain? (Does Cardio Make You Fat?)
http://www.SeanNal.com/articles/training/excessive-cardio.php

Although cardio is meant to be used as a calorie-burning tool to help you lose fat and get leaner, the truth is that too much cardio can actually work against you if you aren't careful.

Does cardio make you fat? In and of itself, no. However, the problem is that excessive cardio can have an appetite-stimulating effect that may cause you to over-eat without realizing it. If you aren't tracking your diet in detail and simply try to "eat healthy" based on your hunger levels, there's a very good chance that you may simply cancel out all of your fat burning efforts at the gym, and in some cases, even go in the opposite direction.

For that reason, you'll definitely want to monitor your cardio frequency and only do as much as is necessary. In most cases, 3-5 sessions per week will be plenty for most people in combination with weight training and proper diet.

Not only is too much cardio potentially problematic for the appetite-increasing effects we just outlined, but it simply isn't necessary for fat loss in the first place. Fat loss ultimately comes down to maintaining a calorie deficit over time (15-20% below maintenance is a good guideline) and it's far easier to simply cut some calories from your diet than trying to burn them all through cardio. It's a lot harder to burn 400 calories on the treadmill than it is to simply cut out a few small food choices here and there throughout the day.

Is cardio important? As an overall part of any health and fitness program, yes. However, most people way over emphasize it, and too much cardio exercise is not only unnecessary but potentially counterproductive to your fat burning results.
