Rafea Um Gomar, a trained solar engineer, has set up 80 solar installations, providing electricity to her village in the eastern desert of Jordan.Trained in India, she's the first female solar engineer in Jordan.

Her mission is to improving living conditions for her community and change women's lives. Initially facing opposition, she has now convinced her community and started training women from the village. She taught them how to assemble a solar unit board and how to connect it to lamps.

One of her trainees says: “It’s better for women to go out instead of staying at home, to get more knowledge and more skills. It increases our self-confidence". Rafea wants to develop women's input into the local economy. But she faces a big challenge in getting donations to buy supplies.

Rafea's next dream is to open a solar energy training cooperative to empower and train women from all over Jordan. Her aim is to reduce poverty and increase women's independence, using a clean source of energy.
