Western Germany used to be a hotbed of talented modern artists, with the Rhineland producing the avant-garde likes of Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys ... as well as collectors.But after reunification Berlin also became capital of the German art scene. Now Cologne, Dusseldorf and other Rhineland cities are fighting to reestablish their credentials.
