Kenin has been on a comeback trail this year, having reached the quarterfinals of the US Open. She defeated sixth seed Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets in the second round before coming back from a set down to beat Katie Volynets in the third round.

Potapova has also been in good form this year, reaching the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships. She defeated Alycia Parks in three sets in the second round before beating top seed Ons Jabeur in three sets in the third round.

The two players have met twice before, with each player winning one match. The head-to-head is currently tied at 1-1.
