The Calculus of IT - Episode 16 - 3/13/2024 |
|
In Episode 16, Mike and Nate discuss Chapter 17 of the IT Survival Guide. This chapter is a deeper dive into Chapter 6 of the ITSG as we explore the nature of the partnership between the IT Leader and their first hire. This partnership is incredibly important not only for developing and implementing the IT Strategy but also serves as the baseline for the rest of the IT Department's organizational development.
Mike and I also kicked off our AIAF podcast during the second half of this podcast with Episode 1, which focuses on Claude 3, the impact of a multi-dimensional AI modeling, the acceleration of AI development to some abstract end, and its impact on the narrowing of data availability for the masses. Plus, there is some other AI stuff that we feel is important to dive into, including another take on the Tech Accord and the latest news on the Microsoft AI "Key" and the next generation of NPUs. Plus, there is the usual banter and other stuff. Post-chapter 17 analysis/reflection questions: -How will you balance tactical tasks and strategic leadership responsibilities as your partnership develops? -What communication and documentation strategies can keep you and your partner well-coordinated, especially in a remote or hybrid work environment? -As an IT leader, how can you continue to lead by example while taking on more strategic duties and providing opportunities for leadership to your partner? -How can you solicit feedback from your partner to strengthen your leadership skills and ensure fair evaluation of their performance? -How can you help your partner build strong working relationships with other departments and stakeholders? -What challenges might arise in evaluating your partner's performance, and when will you determine they are ready for more responsibility? -What qualities or indicators would you look for in a potential IT partner? -Discuss the importance of leveraging unique strengths between you and your IT partner to foster innovation and drive the IT strategy. -Reflect on a past partnership that did not work as intended. What lessons did you learn that can be applied to forming a successful IT partnership? -Considering role evolution, how can you and your IT partner prepare for and adapt to changing responsibilities in the IT landscape? -Discuss the ethical considerations of hiring a partner from a competitor or previous employer and how to navigate these challenges while maintaining professional integrity. |
