How effective are current sanctions on Israeli settler violence? | DW News

Palestinians living alongside hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem say that increasing violence has left them worried for their lives and futures. The United Nations says that violent settler attacks on Palestinians have increased since the Hamas terror attacks of October 7th and the war in Gaza. Locals interviewed in our report say international sanctions against some settlers are not helping to curb the violence.
Earlier this spring, in March 2024, Israel seized 800 hectares of land in the West Bank, with Israel's extreme-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declaring sections in the northern Jordan Valley, near the Israeli settlement of Yafit, to be “state lands.” Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories are illegal under international law.
