"Limiting Long Term Space Debris: The Role of Responsible Behavior in Addressing Debris in Space" - The second multi-expert panel of the USSPACECOM Legal Conference 2022 addresses the critical topic of space debris. Limiting the creation of long-lived space debris is one of the five key "Tenets" of responsible behavior as elaborated in Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's July 2021 "Tenets of Responsible Behavior." Moderated by Major Brian Green, the Chief of Space Operations Law for the U.S. Space Force's Space Training and Readiness Command, this panel was comprised of the following experts:
- Dr. Everett Dolman, Professor of Military Strategy, U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff College - Dr. Laura Grego, Stanton Nuclear Security Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - Dr. Francesca Letizia, Space Debris Engineer, European Space Agency Space Debris Office, - Mr. Douglas Ligor, Senior Behavioral / Social Scientist, RAND Corporation The 2nd Annual USSPACECOM Legal Conference, co-hosted by the USSPACECOM Legal Office and the US Air Force Academy's Law, Technology, & Warfare Research Cell, was a 3-day event, which took place at Polaris Hall, United States Air Force Academy, and Peterson Space Force Base between 4 and 6 April 2022. The theme of the 2022 Conference was "Responsible Behavior in Space," with panels and keynotes focusing on the "Tenets of Responsible Behavior" for space operations by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in July 2021.
