তার ডাকনাম ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড। আসল নাম এডওয়ার্ড টীচ। এছাড়াও তার কয়েকটি উপনাম ছিল। যেমনঃ থাচ,থাচি,থাক,টাক ইত্যাদি উল্লেখযোগ্য।
এছাড়াও ভার্জিনিয়ার গভর্নর স্পটউডও ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের পিছনে অনেকদিন ধরে লেগেছিল।কয়েকবারই সে ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডকে ধরতে গিয়ে ব্যর্থ হয়।তার এই উৎসাহের পিছনে অবশ্য ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের লুকানো গুপ্তধনের গুজবের ভূমিকা ছিল অনেক বেশি।তাই সে নিজে অর্থ যোগান দিয়ে ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের পেছনে সৈন্য লেলিয়ে দেয়।যার ফলশ্রুতিতে ১৭১৮ সালের ২২ নভেম্বর তারিখে ভয়ানক এক যুদ্ধের পর ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড নিহত হয়।তার কাটা মাথা অনেকদিন ভার্জিনিয়ার হ্যাম্পটন নদীর কাছে খুঁটিতে গেঁথে রাখা হয় যেন তা দেখে জলদস্যু এবং ভবিষ্যৎ জলদস্যুরা ভয় পায়।
