Turning Pain Into Power: Javier Espinoza at TEDxOrangeCoastWomen

For six years now Javier Espinoza has directed "In A Box," an initiative that provides essential items to women and children living in domestic violence shelters. Through this program, necessities such as underwear, feminine products, clothes, toiletries, baby supplies, seasonal gifts and school supplies are aesthetically packed into big boxes and sent to shelters.

As a senior at the University of Redlands he is a double major in Women/Gender studies and Sociology. In Redlands he teaches workshops on gender equality to incarcerated youth in San Bernardino's Juvenile Hall. His passion for domestic violence prevention and gender education stem from his childhood as a low-income, first generation, Mexican American male. He was raised by a single, affectionate mom who took her kids and fled from a life of domestic violence. Because of this, he grew up thinking, "if my mom could raise five kids on her own, on a house cleaning salary, there's nothing women can't do."

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
