I have always looked forward to the month of December despite it signaling the end of the year and an addition to my age :P Having lived in the sandpit most of my life, December ushers in the absolute best winter weather one could ask for. Dubai bursts with life; the city calendars are brimming with outdoor events from concerts to matches to festivals to bazaars. And this is without even considering endless birthdays, Christmas and the New Year! In Lahore, December means shadi season is in full swing; it translates to foggy mornings, hot cups of chai, family barbecues and runny noses.

The day I was born and the day I officially transitioned from 'single' to 'married' also takes place, 14 days apart, in the month of December. New beginnings, different meanings. But the month of December is more special to me because I share my wedding anniversary with the birth date of one of the most special people I know & one of the dearest members of my family. My cousin Mariam Baji was born on the 5th of December some 4 decades ago and we lost her to a long and brave battle with cancer last year. (May her soul rest in eternal peace.) On this important day, I celebrate both my 1st wedding anniversary and Mariam Baji’s life. 16 years ago, Mayyan was the first girl in our family to get married and the first song I taught the girl cousins was ‘Mehndi hai Rachne wali’…1 year ago we repeated it on my Nikkah celebration in her love and to her memory.

This month is dedicated to Mariam Apa and the sweet melodies that remind us of love, loved ones, pure hearts and special souls. Please say a little prayer.
