Due to the business model of most Essential oils companies, pretty much anybody who recommends them to you is on the payroll.
In this video I'm looking at some dodgy health claims by some people who sell them.

TITLE - Essential Oils and Illegal Health Claims

In a previous video in this series I looked at how the FDA considers essential oils a cosmetic, which means they escape any medical or even supplement regulation by any governing body.

And because essential oils are not regulated retailers cannot make any type of health claim, because this then classifies them as drugs. But the company Young Living Essential Oils had salespeople doing this, and the FDA caught up with them.
SNIPPET: "... FDA has determined that many of your Young Living Essential Oil products, such as, but not limited to, “Thieves,” “Cinnamon Bark,” “Oregano,”... are promoted for conditions that cause them to be drugs..."

Now in that FDA warning letter, they listed some examples of illegal claims that sales people were using on their websites and social. I thought you'd like to see some shortened snippets:

“Regular use of rosemary essential oil may . . . help prevent diseases associated with free radicals, including cancer and heart disease.”

Okay, that's not so bad.

“Ylang Ylang is used medicinally . . . for the treatment of . . . arterial hypertension . . . diabetes . . . insomnia, heart palpitations, and tachycardia.”
“Peppermint oil has so many more uses . . . asthma, autism, brain injury . . . Crohn’s disease . . . multiple sclerosis, paralysis . . ..”

Okay. Starting to feel like they over-stepped the line.
But what about cancer?

“Frankincense oil is toxic only to cancer cells (unlike chemotherapy that kills healthy cells too)... Causes cancer cells to implode through ‘apoptosis’... Helps the body heal from all types of cancer in clinical data... Helps to prevent cancer – using it appears to lower risk of cancer...”

“According to a study... Myrtle inhibited prostate and breast cancer cells along with Sandalwood at very low concentrations. Sandalwood essential oil ranked number one for inhibiting growth of breast cancer at 98.1% and Myrtle was at 95.2%.”

WOW. That was some very specific numbers. To 1 decimal place. And I never found ANY of these studies.

“Oils for the Autism Spectrum!... Many have found a protocol of essential oils and supplements have helped ease the symptoms of autism-related issues...”

Gee whats with everyone acting like autism is the most horrible things to happen to someonee. Making it out like it's Ebola or something... Speaking of which.

"Viruses (including Ebola) are no match for Young Living Essential Oils"
“Thieves oil can be . . . applied topically on the skin to help the body fight off infection . . . If Ebola was going around in my area . . . I would apply it to my feet and armpits 2x/day or more and take it in capsules at least 2x/day for preventive purposes.”

The regulatory loopholes - alongside some seriously dishonest multi-level marketing – has led to some quite extreme and unproven health claims surrounding essential oils.
Therefore, it’s important that we have a conservative mindset and do some of our own research – much like you do with dietary supplements (I hope) – before buying into any great promises.
