What is line breeding in dogs and why should you care if the puppy you are thinking of adding to your family has been line bred? Line breeding is a form of inbreeding, mating dogs that are related.

This might sound like a terrible idea, and while it can cause real health problems in the puppies, sometimes they can actually end up being healthier than pedigree dogs that are not bred in this way.

The closer the relationship of the parents in line breeding dogs determines the chance of health problems being present - known as the coefficient of inbreeding. Sometimes it can get very complicated!
