Flightpath #11: CDP CEO Patricia McIlreavy on care of people within your organization... |
![]() |
(This show was originally filmed in late July, before the Beirut explosion) Steve's guest is Patricia McIlreavy, the CEO of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP). A significant grant-awarding body, the CDP's mission is to leverage the power of philanthropy to mobilize a full range of resources that strengthen communities' ability to withstand disasters and recover equitably when they occur. CDP manages domestic and international Disaster Funds on behalf of corporations, foundations, and individuals through targeted, holistic, and localized grantmaking.
Steve and Patricia discuss an array of issues attractive to managers in the disaster response sector and beyond. Patricia became head of CDP only a few weeks into the COVID-19 crisis, and she and Steve discuss taking over an organization amid a crisis. They also discuss ways to look after staff working remotely during a pandemic, creating unique pressures. Her advice is, it's OK to go easy on yourself, and it's the job of a good manager to help people do that, even if the downside is a delay to a project. In this first series, Steve and guests candidly discuss how their organizations have been impacted by COVID-19 and their strategies for overcoming the obstacles thrown up. Unlike other crises, COVID-19 has hit disaster response and humanitarian relief NGOs in their home bases, reducing their capacity to act and undermining their sustainability. |
