There, she majored in Theatre Arts for the Rio Hondo College and then went to study at the University of California, Riverside. Her career break happened when she starred in a Lipton Ice Tea Commercial in 1974. However, she only rose to Hollywood's stardom after being offered Julie McCoy's character in the sitcom "The Love Boat", when she was only 23 years old. The TV show was mostly inspired by the book Love Boats, written by Jeraldine Saunders, who was the first woman to achieve the post of cruise director in the Princess Cruises group. The storyline followed the ship's crew – one of which was the cruise director Julie McCoy, the character portrayed by the actress – and its affluent passengers. Filming for "The Love Boat" occurred mainly aboard Princess Cruises' ships and had the actual cruise passengers as extras. Eventually, the show grew to become very popular and so did the stars who interpreted the main characters.
