This LATE explored the traditions of Matariki and the place of this festival within contemporary culture. What does it mean to people in today's society and does it have a legitimate place in our national calendar?

The evening's panel discussion guests included pianist, composer and researcher Te Ahukaramu Charles Royal; historian and orator Pita Turei; Director of Maori Partnerships at Auckland Museum, Haare Williams; and singer, Whirimako Black. The discussion was moderated by actor and playwright Kirk Torrance.

The discussion was followed by a night of music. Te Ahukaramu Charles Royal began with two piano solos. He was followed by innovative violinist Elena before the two played duets. Opera singer Howard McGuire then joined Royal. After the moving classically based performances, Whirimako Black and her band saw the night out with their unique blend of traditional Maori instruments, Maori lyrics, acoustic and electric guitars.
