Rare pics of Uttam Kumar…he reigned supreme in Bengali cinema for 30 yrs since 1950’s…his initial few films (about 7) flopped…early days he was called ‘Flop Master General’ when he visited studios with people laughing about…in 1952 (Basu Poribar & Sharey Chuattar) he was getting ahead…next year Ora Thakey Odhare closer to jackpot…1954 he hit the bull’s eyes with Suchitra Sen again in Agni Parikha 18th film)…it ran 65 weeks…people hailed him as Guru…from thereon no look back ever…he scaled the heights that none did or could ever do….Satyajit Ray penned a story exclusively keeping him in mind…Nayak 1966…Govt of India conferred the title Mahanayak….he acted in 212 films incl ca 8-10 Hindi ones…ca 30 films with Mahanayika…the pair…the hottest ever in romantic cinemas… usually very easy going, simple, sliding into characters in styles…of course played a whole canvas of roles besides romance…paired with many other heroines…next max with Sabitri, Supriya, Madhabi…also Arundhati Devi, Aparna, Sharmila, Kaberi, Sandhya Roy, Sumitra Mukherjee, Sumitra Sanyal, Anjana, Lolita, Anita Guha, Basabi Nandi etc…extended to earlier greats Sandhyarani, Sunanada Debi, Bharati Debi, Manju Dey…absolutely mind-boggling…enacted Sarat Chandra classic roles in 7 films including 5 with Suchitra…produced 5 films, directed 2, composed music 2, sang Rabindrasangeet & adhunik on All India Radio…above all most unique screen presence, charisma…on the side always interested in human welfare…created Shilipi Gosthi association specially to look after poor & needy old in the film industry…he wished he would die while in shooting such was his passion & love…indeed he had a heart attack during shooting of film “Ogo Badhu Sundari” & died soon after….life span 1926 -1980 at only 53 yrs.
Comments:
Satyajit Ray admitted that there were flaws in his direction in “Nayak” but none in Uttam Kumar's performance. He also confessed that if Uttam had refused the film, he would have abandoned it.
Rajesh Khanna, the Bollywood superstar said: "He is the perfect ambassador of Indian cinema. No one carries Indian culture in a Kurta and Dhoti as well as he does."

অরুন কুমার চ্যাটার্জ্জী বড় হয়ে একটু আধটু নাটক করতেন…গান গাইতেন…Kolkata port office এ চাকরী করতেন…সিনেমা পাড়ায় ঘোরাঘুরি করে ১৯৪৮ সাল থেকে কিছু সুযোগ পেয়েছিলেন…কিছুই হচ্ছে না…আবার ঐ চাকরীতেই ফিরে যাবেন…এমন একটা অস্থির মন...কিশোরবেলার সাথী গৌরী…১৯৪৮ বিয়ের পরে…ভীষন প্রেরণা দিয়েছিলেন চলচ্চিত্রে থাকতে…আরও চেষ্টা করলেন…১৯৫২ জীবনের ৮ নং ছবি “বসু পরিবার” ও ১০ নং সূচিত্রার সঙ্গে “সাড়ে চুয়াত্তর” জনগনকে সারা দিলো…১৯৫৩ তে ঐ জুটি করে “ওরা থাকে ওধারে”…বাঙ্গাল-ঘটি পরিবার…জনপ্রিয়তা উঠেছে…১৯৫৪…অগ্রদূত নিয়ে এলো আশপূর্ণা দেবীর “অগ্নিপরীক্ষা” (১৮ নং)…স্বনামধন্য অনুপম ঘটকের সুরে সূচিত্রার নেপথ্যে সন্ধ্যা গাইছে “গানে মোর কোন ইন্দ্রধনু”…প্রথম পরিচয়ে অজানা কিরীটকে শোনাচ্ছে…ছবিটা প্রেক্ষাগৃহে ৬৫ হপ্তা একটানে চললো…জনতা কাছে পেল এক অপরূপ জুটি রূপোলী পর্দায়…আকাশের দুটি চিরন্তন তারা…নায়কের যাত্রা শুরু উর্ধগগনে…লোকের মুখে “গুরু”… সূচিত্রাকে নিয়ে মহানায়ক ৩০ টা ছবি…box office উপচে পরেছে…সবাই জানেন…মহানায়কের সাথে অন্য ৩ জন মহা অভিনেত্রী সাবিত্রী চ্যাটার্জী, সুপ্রিয়া দেবী ও মাধবী মুখার্জীও অনেকছবি করেছেন…এছাড়া অরুন্ধতী দেবী, অনূভা গুপ্তা, অপর্ণা সেন, শর্মিলা ঠাকুর, সন্ধ্যা রায়, কাবেরী বসু, সুমিত্রা মুখার্জী, অঞ্জনা ভৌমিক, ললিতা চ্যাটার্জী, বাসবী নন্দী ইত্যাদি…আগেপরে সন্ধ্যারানী, ভারতী দেবী, মঞ্জু দে, সুমিত্রা দেবী, সুনন্দা দেবী দেরও lead roles ছিলো…শরৎচন্দ্রের উপন্যসে ৭টা ছবি…মহানায়িকার সাথে ৫টে…নিজের banner এ produce করে ৫টি, পরিচালনা ২, সংগীত ২…আধুনিক ও রবীন্দ্রসংগীত AIR এ গেয়েছেন …বেতারে রেকর্ড আছে…মনে দরদ ও মানবিকতাও ছিলো অসীম…“শিল্পী পরিষদ” সৃষ্টি করেন…মনে চেয়েছিলেন যেন studio তে মৃত্যুবরণ করতে পারি…শেষ ছবি “ওগো বধূ সুন্দরী” shooting সময় হৃদরোগ …মাত্র ৫৪ বছরে শান্তিনীড়ে (১৯২৬-১৯৮০)
