Astradhari - Epic Indian Music

video thumbnail
Music by Farya Faraji. This is my first proper attempt at a composition in the style of Indian music--I decided to keep it very general and not attempt to pinpoint a particular tradition, be it folk, Hindustani or Carnatic. This composition emulates elements from all over the Indian subcontinent.

The Astradhari are warriors in Hindu mythology who are in posession of an astra, cosmic weapons that draw from the specific powers of a deity, and that can be invoked through mantras. The astradhari shown in the picture is Arjuna, who used Aindrastra, which could summon a shower of arrows like rain upon the enemy.

The lyrics are in Sanskrit, and consist of typical mantras and prayers chanted by Hindus to this day.

Lyrics in Sanskrit:
Om namo narayana,
Harim om, namo narayana,

Om maha ganapataye namaha,

Shukla ambara dharam Vissnnum,
Shashi varnnam catur bhujam,
Prasanna vadanam dhyaayet sarva vighno pashaantaye,

Swami saranam ayyappa saranam,
Swami saranam,

Ram, Ram, Ram, sita Ram,
Ram, Ram, Ram, sita Ram,

Approximate English translation:
Let us bow to the divine Narayana,

My salutations to Lord Ganesha,

O Lord, he whose dress is the wide white sky, who is all pervading, whose arms are spread to all four sides
One with the blissful face, We meditate on you, nullify all troubles,

Rama, Rama, Rama, Sita, Rama
