Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino provided on Wednesday an update regarding the measures taken under the Emergencies Act to respond to ongoing blockades by those opposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates, the Trudeau government, and a host of other issues.
The minister said three of the major border crossings have been reopened after police operations. The Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ont., the Coutts border in Alberta, and the Pacific Highway bridge in B.C. are all open. Operations to reopen border crossings resulted in arrests, laying charges and the seizure of weapons. Mendocino said the group behind the protests is “organized, agile, knowledgeable and driven by an extremist ideology.” He added that Canadians need to resist the urge to look at the blockades as isolated incidents. “We need to be clear-eyed about the seriousness of these incidents. Indeed, several of the individuals at Coutts have strong ties to a far-right, extreme organization with leaders who are in Ottawa,” he said. He added that Ottawa police issued warnings to protesters still in the city to leave and end their protest. The emergencies act was invoked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday for the first time in Canadian history.
