When you have a blood pressure reading done, you'll be given two numbers that look like a fraction. The top number tells the amount of pressure in your arteries when your heart contracts. This is called systolic pressure. The bottom number indicates pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is known as diastolic pressure.

Your blood pressure levels are broken down into four stages. This video lists and briefly describes them, from normal blood pressure to stage 4, where hypertension be a real danger and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

High blood pressure is a serious medical condition. Left untreated, it can lead to kidney damage or even failure, blindness, heart problems, or stroke.
