Jim Massa and Jennifer Hynes - Dinosaurs, Oceans and a Great Die Off |

Science Talk Jim on the NYT article to be discussed ( The Great Dying: Earth's largest-ever mass extinction is a warning for humanity) "Nice to see Broecker mentioned. He is the grandfather of climate science. He developed many techniques now in use today. Newer techniques in use are based on what he did. Stommel built upon the work of Harald Sverdrup (in whose honor we have the Sverdrup, Sv which describes current flow in the ocean. 1 Sv = 10^6 m^3/sec of water). Stommel developed the equations that explain how the GS flows (what we now call western intensification). Sverdrup worked in 1st half of 20th century and make assumptions to try and get a handle on current flow (which is a balance between geostrophic flow, wind stress and vorticity). His work was an important starting point. Stommel took it much further."
