We need to talk to boys about online misogyny | Ben Hurst & Jamie Windust | TEDxLondonWomen

video thumbnail
Scary headlines about boys being indoctrinated or radicalised by online misogyny and openly sexist influencers have schools and parents worried. In this interview Ben Hurst, Head of Facilitation at Beyond Equality, shares how important it is to talk to boys and young men about their attitudes towards their women and girls and not shut down these discussions out of fear or anxiety. He argues for open conversations with boys and young men as well as equipping care-givers with the tools, resources and training they need to take on these complex conversations. He also explains that we need to create new models of mentorship and financial training for young people and encourage their critical thinking - rather than demonising or alienating them.

Ben Hurst is an activist, advocate, speaker, host, presenter, facilitator, trainer and model. As the Head of Facilitation at Beyond Equality, he focuses on deconstructing and reconstructing masculinities with men and boys. Ben also works as a freelance Diversity and Inclusion Consultant with a focus on race and gender. Ben is the co-host of TEDxLondon podcast, Climate Curious. Ben is in conversation with Jamie Windust, an author, model, broadcaster, TEDxLondonWomen speaker and Contributing Editor at Gay Times. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
