On Wednesday, January 27th, the Doomsday Clock created by scientists and security experts remains stuck at a 100-second warning as the COVID-19 pandemic infected 100 million people around the globe.

“The pandemic serves as a historic wake up call, a vivid illustration that national governments and the international organizations are unprepared to manage complex and dangerous challenges,” says Dr. Rachel Bronson, president and CEO, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

The Doomsday Clock is a scientific symbol that represents the likelihood of a man-made global catastrophe. Maintained since 1947 by the members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at University of Chicago, the Clock is a metaphor for threats to humanity from global nuclear war. It represents the hypothetical global catastrophe as “midnight，” and the Bulletin's opinion on how close the world is to a global catastrophe as a number of “minutes” or “seconds” to midnight. Factors like nuclear and biological weapons, climate changes and regional disputes and wars are all under consideration upon the annual decision.

Right now, the Clock’s status is the closest to midnight since its start in 1947.
