video thumbnail
The iPhone 7 won't have a 3.5mm headphone jack! So how will you listen to music? By buying a pair of Lightning port headphones, of course! In this video, you'll learn about some of the best, including the Philips Fidelio M2L/27 and the Sony MDR-1ADAC.

So by now, you've probably heard the news. The iPhone 7 won't have the venerable stereo mini jack that's been standard since the Walkman days... or maybe even before that! So you've got two options. You could either buy the (very expensive) adapter that Apple will try to sell you.... or you could purchase a new set of headphones. Ones which plug into the Lightning connector.

Lightning headphones have been around for a while now. They're very popular with audiophiles, because they transmit the signal in a digital form that's less prone to interference or crosstalk. But there's one problem - their price. Most are quite costly, because they include a digital-to-analog converter and amplifier.

However, you are getting a lot for your money. Just consider the Philips Fidelio M2L/27. For a start, it looks fantastic, with its premium aluminium & stitched leather construction and memory foam ear cups. It also sounds amazing, with 40mm neodymium drivers and bass reflex ports.

As an added bonus, while you're enjoying the impressive bass, you won't be annoyed by ambient noise, because they have a super-aural fit (eg. they cup your ears) and are acoustically sealed.

If you're interested in the specs, they have a 7Hz - 25kHz frequency response, and 150mW maximum power output. And they're compatible with the iPhone 5S and later, and the iPad 4th generation and later.

They cost $300 on Amazon, which IS pretty steep, but for a pair of Lightning headphones it's actually quite conservative (?!?!?!)

If you're a bit annoyed with paying that much money for earphones that only work on an iOS device (and who wouldn't be?) then why not consider the Sony MDR-1ADAC.

Again, it has a very pleasing design, with a rigid metal headband and black leather earcups. It also has incredible sonics, with liquid crystal polymer diaphragms that give balanced sound across the entire frequency range.

But what really gives the Sonys an edge over their competitors is the number of connections they possess. You can either hook up via digital (USB/Lightning) or 3.5mm analogue, so virtually any audio source in the world can be used with these cans.

They also have an incredible DAC, which allows you to listen to PCM at up to 24-bit / 192kHz resolution, plus 2.8MHz and (gasp!) even 5MHz DSD - that's Direct Stream Digital, the same format used on SACDs. (Who remembers them?)

At the moment on Amazon, these amazing Sony earphones are only $279. So they cost LESS than the Philips, yet provide MORE functionality. Why not get these ones instead?
