"How You Say It: How Speech Structures Our Lives and Our World"
Social psychologist Katherine D. Kinzler shows how language divides our social worlds. Moderated by Professor Nick Epley.

Beyond the literal content it provides, language conveys developmental origins of humans’ thinking about language as a social category. Drawing on her research in psychology, and also on broader themes from linguistics, anthropology, economics, and the law, Kinzler will provide evidence that language provides a critical, and potentially primary, way in which people divide their social worlds. Yet, while linguistic diversity may cause social divisions, it can also facilitate social understanding: children exposed to diverse linguistic environments exhibit more effective social communication skills than children in monolingual environments, for instance.
