Crying is vital to our mental wellbeing
Sometimes there’s nothing like a good cry to make you feel better. Crying shows you are human, not a robot. It is so not a sign of weakness, but a sign of courage and strength.

Rather than washing away your tears, allow them to awash you, because expressing how you feel through tears is healthy. They help you release emotions and create a wonderful sense of release as well as exhaustion, despite what you are going through.

Tears are shed out of grief, anger, joy, love, frustration, being touched by someone or something, watching a movie, having a tender moment.

In our society, we are taught to repress our tears, to hold them in as they are seen as a sign of weakness and on no account should you show how you are feeling, with or without reason.

‘Stiff upper lip’ comes to mind. ‘Girls are too emotional’.’ Boys don’t cry – be a man’.

In fact, we are told not to show them is a sign of strength and being in control of our emotions. As a crier, I used to find this so hard. I felt so ashamed when I cried. I cry because I feel deeply. This then became a vicious cycle as I was told I was too emotional. To pull myself together. What will people think?

However, deep within I knew tears were healing as I used to feel so much better after a big cry. Did I feel exhausted, yes? Was I emotionally drained, absolutely? It was like a big bubble was always burst. The dam could flow, in fact, it could create a flood. A flood of crocodile tears, as my father used to say.
