Haiti -- the graveyard of good intentions: Bertrhude Albert & Priscilla Zelaya at TEDxUF

video thumbnail
Every year, Americans spend their money and time giving to the third world. But what if those good intentions actually harmed the people instead of helping them? Bertrhude and Priscilla introduce a model of aid that empowers the local people and allows them to become self-sufficient.

Bertrhude is a graduate student at the University of Florida pursuing a Masters in Latin American Studies. She was born in Haiti but moved to the US at the age of 8. In 2011 Bertrhude co-founded a Gainesville-based 501(c)3 Nonprofit called Projects for Haiti, Inc. (P4H). As CEO of P4H Bertrhude's heart is to see sustainable development and growth in Haiti. She is confident that she will be working with the Haitian people until her dying breath.

Priscilla Zelaya was born and raised in Miami, Florida. While earning her Bachelor's and Master's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Florida, Priscilla co-founded a local 501(c)3 nonprofit, Projects for Haiti, Inc. (P4H). She is currently a 2nd grade teacher in Gainesville, FL and serves as the Chief Operations Officer of P4H. Her passion for Haiti and sustainable development has led to her to work fervently to see a thriving Haiti.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
