How devised theatre empowers us to engage in a culture of fluidity | Brian Lau | TEDxHKU |
|
Assigned as male at birth, Brian Eagen Lau is born with an intersex body. Instead of living up to the fixed gender imposed upon him/her, s/he has been making sense of his/her gender identity by exploring what is inside him/her through devised theatre, reconnecting to a part of his/her cultural heritage and appreciating the perfect blend of masculinity and feminity in Thai traditional dancing. Facing all the inevitable dissonant situations, s/he holds onto the strength inherent from his/her name and passion to be a performer and an educator, letting his/her river of life flow and glow with infinite possibilities. Once lost in the myriad complexities of their intersex gender and Thai-Hongkonger cultural identity, Brian Lau found themself through the performing arts. Having experienced the transformative power of theatre firsthand, they now utilise the arts to guide their students on similar journeys of self-discovery as an educator. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
