After five years of phases implementation, Indian Prairie School District 204 elementary schools can stay cool as temperatures heat up.

Elementary school classrooms in District 204 will all have air conditioning by the start of the 2019-2020 school year.

Adding air conditioning to classrooms has been an ongoing project for the district. It’s been done in phases over the last five years, due to limited funding, but will finally be completed in August.

“This includes installation units in the total 590 large classrooms at our 19 non-aired conditioned elementary buildings. And this also includes the art and music rooms in these buildings,” said Todd DePaul the project manager at IPSD.

The one area of the 19 elementary schools in the district still lacking air conditioning is the media centers. Cooling those would run an estimated $3.3 million, and would require additional time to complete.

“Unfortunately unlike the other five phases this work can not be completed on second shift during the school year,” said DePaul. “And due to the short summer construction season, it may take three summers to complete this work.”

District 204’s middle schools and high schools are all air conditioned, with the exception of Indian Plains.
