#metoo and why no one should be afraid to earn a wage | Yasmine Mustafa | TEDxPhiladelphiaWomen

video thumbnail
Did you know that there are millions of people in the US who put themselves at risk each and every day they go to work? Nearly 60% of hotel housekeepers - mostly women of color and immigrant women - have experienced sexual harassment. Too often, they are powerless because these jobs are their livelihood. In this talk, social entrepreneur Yasmine Mustafa shares her experiences of living in fear as a refugee and undocumented immigrant, combating harassment in her previous jobs working in the hospitality sector, and how the #metoo movement is fueling change within the hotel/hospitality industry as a whole. Co-Founder & CEO of ROAR for Good, Yasmine Mustafa is dedicated to ROAR's mission of leveraging technology and education to create safer workplaces. ROAR's hotel safety platform assures that housekeeping and staff are secure 24/7/365. Prior to ROAR, she founded and sold her first company to a prominent content marketing firm in Silicon Valley. Yasmine brought the first women's coding nonprofit to Philadelphia, offering affordable opportunities to women of all ages interested in learning software development. She sits on the board of Coded by Kids, a non-profit committed to providing free tech education to youth in underserved communities. The challenges that Yasmine faced migrating to the U.S. as a refugee and discovering she was undocumented, drive her service as a champion for immigrants. BBC selected Yasmine as one of its 100 Women of 2016 for her work in empowering women and the underserved. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
