Planned Parenthood Presents: Taking Care of Your _____. Episode Three. Keeping It Clean and Healthy.

Your vagina cleans itself on its own — like, well...you know. So don’t douche or wash inside your vagina.

Discharge from your vagina is normal and healthy. It may be clear, white, or slightly yellowish when it dries on your underwear. It can change a little throughout your menstrual cycle, too. But if your discharge is an unusual color or texture, has a strong, unpleasant, smell, or there’s a lot of itching or irritation, it’s time to see a nurse or doctor.

It’s important to take care of your vulva and vagina. Stay on top of routine exams and recommended tests, like: Pap tests, HPV tests, STD testing, and regular check-ups. Your doctor or nurse will tell you how often they need to see you.

If you have sex, make sure you use protection, like condoms and dental dams. And get tested for STDs. Most STDs don’t show any symptoms. So it’s important to get tested, even if you feel totally fine.

All vulvas and vaginas deserve to be happy and healthy. You can visit your local Planned Parenthood health center for all your vulva and vagina-care needs. Make an appointment meow!
