The Netherlands is a tax haven for the super-rich. At the same time, we are faced with harrowing shortages in the public sector, such as education and health care. Shouldn't this be different, after this crisis?

'Taxes, taxes, taxes and the rest is bullshit!', historian Rutger Bregman said last year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the super-rich gather for their annual get-togethers.

In doing so, he pointed out a painful fact to the whole world: the super-rich pay far too little tax and thus contribute to the increasing inequality and poverty of public services.

The Netherlands is part of that problem: it is a tax haven for the super-rich. Philanthropists are generous, but often avoid normal taxes. According to the American writer and political analyst Anand Giridharadas, this charity is a cigar out of its own box: 'Many rich people would rather give ten million to charities than five million in taxes. Philanthropy in the United States comprises more than $400 billion a year'.
