Lyrics and Meaning:

Naan kaathuvaakula kaalara nadandein yennoda vayaloram

strolling through my fields

Nalla kaathu vandhu thaan thenmaangu paadiyathenoda seviyoram

the wind whispers a folkish lilt in my ears

Mazhai saaral vandhudhaan manvaasam veesudhu yennoda oororam

with the drizzle, the fragrance of wet earth spreads throughout our village

Maadu kannellaam oodi aadi thirindhadhu yennoda thopporam

cows and calves frolic in the groves

Nalla kaayum kaniyum kaachirukka

the crops are bountiful,

themboda suvaiyum adhilirukka

rich and full of life

indhu ennoda nelaminnu naan sonna kaalamadhu

these echoes of the past, of my land

Adhu yenge ponadhu

where have they all gone?

Akkaraiyum pachai illa ikkaraiyum pachai illa

there is no greenery whichever way you turn

manpuzhuvukku unavilla adha kaaka vazhiyilla

even the earthworm is starved and helpless

nadhiyila neere illa

the rivers have run dry

vandal mannum illa

the topsoil has lost its vitality

mannil valamey illa

the soil is no longer rich

idhu nam ninaivil illa

and no one seems to take notice

thoppu thoravu engum illa

there are no groves and rich yields anymore

yerpudikka aangal illa

no men to wield the plough

naathunada pengal illa

no women to transplant the saplings

iyarkkayin uramilla

no natural manure

Mannil Valamey Illa

the soil is no longer rich

Idhu nam ninaivil illa

and no one seems to take notice

Mannil Valamey Illa

the soil is no longer rich

Idhu nam ninaivil illa

and no one seems to take notice

Irukkum mannil valamey illa (2)

whatever soil is left is no longer healthy

Idhu vazhvin ella

this is an existential threat

Naam onna serndhaa maarum nilama

we can reverse this if we come together

Serum Mannim VaLama

the soil can be regenerated

Puvi onnaa vandhuthaan valamum serkudhu nammoda mannoram

rich soil will become the legacy of a unified humanity

Nunnuyirum serndhudhaan manvalam perukkudhu nammoda vayaloram

this living soil, teeming with life, will spread fertility in our fields

Varum kaalam muzhudhumdhaan sandhosham veesudhu ovvorru manadhoram

every heart leaps with joy with the prospect of a promising future

andha nenappu vandhudhaan marugi kasiyudhu yennoda manadhoram

these thoughts overwhelm me and my mind rejoices
