Alone | Edgar Allan Poe | Famous Lyric Poems | Essential Poetry | Best Poems on Life and Reflection

video thumbnail
The experiences that we have as children leave a deep impression on us. In this poem, the feelings of isolation, loneliness, and sadness come to the fore. These emotions spill over into adulthood when the poet can no longer identify with nor derive pleasures from anything. All seems alien and he is confused. He desires that he finds the answers but to his chagrin, they elude him time and again. Edgar Allan Poe allows us a glimpse of a tortured mind where he contends that he, filled with hopelessness and despair cannot look upon things as other people do. His pain and melancholy are so intense that he cannot see himself ever leading a full and happy life. As a poem, it is powerful and significant since Poe's reflections give us some understanding of the tortured life of those suffering from mental illness. The poet ascribes the blame to his own mental state - that of not being able to find common ground with others. The path of righteousness also appears elusive to the desperate man. Gloomy reflections are present throughout the poem. Considered one of Poe's finest poems, it confesses his feelings of desolation and utter despair and his inability to conquer these limiting emotions.
