A severe weather outbreak in North Carolina on May 16, 2023, brought heavy rain, damaging winds and hail to parts of the Charlotte area Tuesday. One of the areas with the worst damage was Cherryville, North Carolina, where trees were uprooted, power lines were knocked down and the entire town lost electricity. Some people believe the damage was caused by a tornado but it hasn't yet been confirmed.

In this video, WCNC Charlotte chief meteorologist tries to determine if it was a tornado or straight-line winds that caused the extensive damage in Cherryville. We won't officially know until the National Weather Service assesses the damage, but Brad Panovich explains in this video why it doesn't matter if it was a tornado, downburst or straight-line winds. #Cherryville
