Hidden Forms of Human Trafficking | Mahi Ramakrishnan | TEDxMonashUniversityMalaysia |
|
Mahi shares gut wrenching stories of child trafficking and slavery in Malaysia and how she sheds light on them as an investigative filmmaker and journalist. She is an investigative journalist and a film maker, with 21 years of experience in the media industry
under her belt. She has been involved in both print and broadcast media where she worked with some of the biggest media outlets in the world including the Associated Press, AFP, Time magazine, USA Today, Al Jazeera, BBC, Voice of America, ARD German TV and National Geographic. Six years ago, she started making investigative films which focused on topics such as trafficking of babies, migrant workers and refugees, the child sex trade and child marriages plus labour and she utilises her documentaries and various storytelling techniques to create awareness, organise communities, and to lobby ASEAN parliamentarians, heads of states, government bodies and non-governmental organisations to act on pressing issues and to initiate policy changes. Mahi is also an activist who works closely with the different refugee communities in Malaysia and together with her son, she has set-up an online platform to match refugees with jobs, with an aim to produce entrepreneurs from among the members of the refugee communities in the long run. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx |
