Carsten Wicke narrates his journey as a student of Ustad Asad Ali Khan and the incidents that compelled him to take up Veena making. Around 2001, he started to learn Dhrupad vocal from Pandit Ashish Sankrityan who was a disciple of many masters of the Dagar tradition. Wicke’s Guruji Ustad Asad Ali Khan also had close connections with the Dagar family. Carsten Wicke describes how he tried to incorporate these two traditions in his Veena playing and while doing so, he realized the limitations of the available instruments. He met Murari Mohan Adhikari, the last of a family of Veena makers who owned the now closed Kanailal and Brothers at Chitpur Road.
Murari made a few instruments for Wicke incorporating both traditional and newer elements to acquire better sustain. After Murari Mohan’s death, he again faced the same problems of finding people who would know the intricacies of a fine instrument such as the Rudra Veena. Finally, after permanently settling down in India in 2009, he himself started working on improving the instrument with the help of a group of workers. In this video he gives a detailed description of each part of the Veena and how it differs from the traditional ones and how these changes positively affect the sound quality.
