Pop culture politics: Corey Souza at TEDxUF

video thumbnail
Corey explores the political nature of popular culture through the medium of dance. Looking at popular dance in the Americas, we find the histories of colonized peoples. It is important to deconstruct the canonized interpretations of so-called "classic" and "popular" dance in order to understand that this hierarchy is constructed due to specific political histories.

Corey is a Ph.D. candidate in cultural anthropology at the University of Florida where her research focuses on performance studies, race and gender in popular culture, particularly in Brazil. Corey is also the owner of S-Connection, LLC, offering classes and performances in circus arts, Afro-Brazilian dance and music, as well as cultural tours in Brazil.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
