Active, Dormant, & Extinct Volcanoes; What is the Difference?

video thumbnail
The Valles Caldera volcano in New Mexico is considered to be an active volcano. Yet, it has not erupted in 40,000 years. It falls under the same category as the Mount Hood volcano in Oregon which last erupted a little more than 150 years ago. Why is this the case? The answer is an often misunderstood difference between active, dormant, and extinct volcanoes. This video will define each of these categories and give volcano related examples.
