Band Wrote Song to FILL UP 3 Mins of DEAD Space to FINISH Album-Became BIGGEST Hit-Professor of Rock

video thumbnail
It was a last-minute song written at record speed. When rock’s greatest trio Rush finished their 9th studio album Signals, they realized they still had 3 minutes and 57 seconds of space left. No big deal right? Well, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart wanted to give their fans the most bang for their buck. So they decided to squeeze one more song onto the record. Only they didn’t write many songs under four minutes. So they gave themselves the ultimate challenge… two days to see if they could do it and dubbed it “Project 3:57.” Well, the song they cranked out called New World Man became their highest charting track of all time. It was unbelievable. I mean these guys practically pulled this song out of thin air. Just an afterthought and it rocketed up the charts. Find out how they beat the clock and improvised their way to their biggest hit… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason it never happened so on here we change history…

Today we are returning one of my favorite bands that we cover on this channel. A band who never really got their due on the charts. But then again, dominating the charts was never part of their game plan. It’s the Canadian progressive trifecta of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart. That’s right, today we’re all about Rush and their classic New World Man, from 1982’s Signals. So for the uninitiated Rush originally formed back in 1968 in Toronto, Canada. We’ve gotten into their origins in our episode on Fly By Night. Great song. So we won’t go into detail on that here. But for almost the entirety of their decades-long career… you could pencil in Peart on the drum kit, Lifeson on guitar, and Lee on vocals, bass, and - very relevant to today’s episode - keyboards as well.

So let’s fast forward to the early 80s and zero in on Rush in the era of New Wave and synthesizers. You know, depending on when you discovered Rush will likely inform your opinion about when they went “mainstream.” And I use that word loosely.

However, I think you can make a strong case that between 1980 and 1984 Rush took their biggest step into the realm of “so-called” normal musical culture. Whether you’re talking album sales, chart positioning, or just general visibility, this was definitely an era of big change for the band. Their first album of the new decade was Permanent Waves. That was released on January 14, 1980. The band dropped two singles dropped from this one.
