The art of saying NO Saying "yes" to something you don't enjoy means "saying no" to the things you do enjoy. You give up on your dreams when you accept a job you don't love. Saying yes to someone you don't like means rejecting a satisfying relationship. You sacrifice your social life when you agree to work overtime. So make sure to: Clearly define your goals (This is what you want to accept. Other than that, no) Understand the effects of saying yes (The more you say yes, the further you drift from your vision) accept that it's acceptable to say no Use the media that you find most comfortable (Facebook, IM, email, face-to-face - Whatever works) Just say what needs to be said; keep it simple. Be courteous (respect the viewpoint of the other side) Offer a substitute (Only if you want to) Reduce your accessibility (Provide your contact only to those important to you) Make a list of everything first (To process your thoughts) Sometimes no reply is a form of reply. Learning to say no is a process that takes time, and getting started can be simple or difficult. But if you understand the value of saying "no," you're already halfway there. |
