VIDEO INFO: The unedited, full-length version of a classic rockumentary which was one of the first of its kind to give this level of fly-on-the-wall access to the entire recording process. Filmed over nearly a year it charts the process of 1989’s ‘Pump’, certainly their most polished album which would arguably share the podium with ‘Toys In The Attic’ and ‘Rocks’ as presenting the band at their absolute best.
It leaves you in no doubt throughout that they were aware of the strength of the material so ‘Love In An Elevator’, ‘Janie’s Got A Gun’ (originally named “Danny’s Got…”) and ‘What It Takes’ are shown from embryos to becoming fully-fledged superhits. But it’s the strength of the second row of tracks such as ‘Young Lust’, ‘FINE’, 'The Other Side' and ‘Monkey On My Back’ which reinforces the album’s truly great status and perhaps define better the overall feel.

The film is also peppered with talking-head interviews in more depth and clarity than ever achieved before or since as the band reflects on both the album itself and their career as a whole. Although cosmetically they were in good shape for rock stars each approaching their 40th birthday (with Steven Tyler almost impersonating his own Barbie doll replica), their world-weary demeanour is evidence of their veteran status and iconic credentials, which had already put them in the same league as the Stones and Zeppelin and, during this period, more than capable of competing with the likes of Guns N’ Roses and Mötley Crüe then leaving them for dead on their own terms and territory.

⚠️ Some Admin: this came out on VHS in 1990 and much of the footage had been shot in a fairly amateurish, low-budget way (which adds to the authenticity and means the camera was therefore not a distraction). This is the DVD transcription that was put out subsequently, with no updates or bonus material and actually suffered from having the arse compressed out of it, leaving permanent interlaced scar tissue which would have been too time-consuming to clean up fully 😔.
