Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who was a member of the Democratic Party until last year, spoke on the final night of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 27, 2020. Van Drew claimed that, "In President Trump's America, we have a strong supply chain, good schools, we're energy independent and protect our environment." The coronavirus pandemic has strained global and national supply chains, including for food and medical supplies, causing shortages and revealing gaps in American manufacturing. And while the United States has increased its domestic oil production, the country is not energy independent. In addition, the Trump administration has rolled back a significant number of environmental rules aimed at reducing pollution and protecting natural habitats. The Republican Party planned a mix of virtual and in-person events in North Carolina and Washington, D.C., for its nominating convention after the coronavirus pandemic interrupted plans for a traditional nominating event.
