My Guilty Pleasure: Engaging with Hip-Hop as a Feminist | Theresa Emily Niklas | TEDxGVAGrad

video thumbnail
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Theresa Emily Niklas once struggled with her passion for hip-hop music and her identity as a feminist growing up in a community far removed from the communities creating the music. In this talk, she discusses issues such as materialism and sexism in hip-hop and how feminist perspectives can be applied to the genre while also acknowledging its importance in providing a platform for marginalised communities. Theresa Emily Niklas, from Germany, is a first-year Master in International and Development Studies student in the Gender, Race & Diversity track. Being passionate about music and arts, she is at the same time determined to dedicate her career to contributing to the vision of a gender-equal world and feminist policymaking. In her talk, she will explore the ways in which her feminist convictions, her love for hip-hop, and her personal background interact, contradict, and complement each other. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
