The making of Cowichan Sweaters by Ameila Charlie, a Newsreel from 1958

video thumbnail
This is from part of a 1958 British Pathe Newsreel about different aspects of BC.

This segment is about Cowichan sweaters and includes footage of Ameila Charlie one the best known knitters from the past. The footage looks like it was very much staged by British Pathe to meet the UK's exceptions of First Nation people dressed like.

The young girl holding the wool for Ameila is Emily Elizabeth aged 5 at the time.

Feeding wool into the the carding machine is 9 year old Amelia Verlie and turning the handle is 17 year old Doris Sophie. In the background Margaret Rose can be seen spinning wool.
